Bio
Kat Steppe (1974) is a Belgian director and screenwriter acclaimed for her visually poetic style and her distinctive blend of storytelling, humour, and deep human warmth.
She initially studied graphic arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent before pursuing film directing at the Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound (RITCS) in Brussels. There, she developed her distinctive approach to character-driven storytelling, rooted in realism and empathy.
Steppe began her professional career in television, working regularly with Flemish broadcasters and production companies. She specialised in socially engaged programmes that explore broader cultural themes through an intimate and personal lens.
She has directed several acclaimed series, including Goed Volk, Bedankt & Merci, Taboe, and Het Vaticaan. Her work has earned international recognition, including an International Emmy nomination for Taboe and awards such as the Prix Europa for Goed Volk.
Throughout her work, Steppe often explores vulnerability, social connection, and the quiet dignity of everyday life. She approaches her subjects with deep respect and a keen eye for cinematic detail, qualities that are also evident in her latest film, Zondag de Negenste.
For Zondag de Negenste, Steppe received the Special Jury Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. The film was also selected as the opening film of the 2025 Film Festival Oostende.
